Photographer Emily Dolenz reception Thursday, Oct 6, 7-9pm

Photographer Emily Dolenz reception Thursday, Oct 6, 7-9pm

Don’t forget to join us on Thursday, October 6, 7-9pm at Tryst (2480 18th Street NW, Washington, DC, trystdc.com) for the opening reception of photographer Emily Dolenz. Ms. Dolenz will be in attendance to talk about the work.

Here’s a little snippet, “I didn’t get into photography because of the darkroom process or because another photographer inspired me. I was given a point and shoot for my 20th birthday and I felt like I had suddenly found my medium as an artist. It’s part of who I am. I don’t go out with the intention of taking life changing images. Each image is just a shot from that moment in my life. My expression of who I was that day. Or how something made me feel. I merely love sharing my art and inspiring people to find something they love just as much.”

The complete exhibition posting can be read here: http://beeswaxarts.com/2011/09/15/photographer-emily-dolenz-opens-at-tryst/.

Blue Reflection

Washington, D.C. (September 1, 2011) – The upcoming exhibition, for photographer Emily Dolenz, will be the first solo showing of her work in Washington, D.C. Opening at Tryst Coffeehouse in Adams Morgan, on Thursday, October 6, 2011, 7-9 p.m., this exhibition features fine art photographs from Dolenz’s latest body of work which reflect her unique view of the world. The exhibition will remain on view until November 1, 2011.

Although born and raised in London, England, Emily Dolenz spent a fair amount of time as a child in the United States with her father Micky Dolenz, drummer for the band The Monkees. Artistic aspirations run in the Dolenz family, after graduation from the University of Wolverhampton in England, Emily moved to Washington, D.C. and attended the Washington School of Photography in Bethesda, MD. Having been in the States for just 5 years, the artist has already started her own photography company, producing commissions for commercial art clients. In addition, this young artist is continuing to pursue a career in fine art and exhibits work around the D.C. metro area, as well as participates in several local art fairs. Emily has donated image rights of her work for non-profits use, such as the Whitman Walker Clinic in D.C., who used an image of the artist’s work for a donor mail campaign in 2010. She also donates work to charity auctions at the Whitman Walker Clinic as well as United Cerebral Palsy. The continued support of nonprofits and ability to raise awareness for special causes is of personal importance to Emily.

Of her photographs, Dolenz says, “The images express my angle on the world. They are designed to show the observer my view of a ‘normal’ scene or object.” Colorful and ranging in subject matter from architecture to nature, the estimated 12 photographs all 24” x 30”, have universal appeal. Always having her camera on hand, Emily documents her day-to-day walks around town as well as her travels. To view Emily Dolenz’s work is to take a trip with her around the world. A banal scene comes to life in a unique way. She takes an every day scene and focuses in on one area or takes

Rise Above

the shot from a unique angle to make it her own. A simple hot air balloon ride in San Diego, CA, Rise Above, becomes a breathtaking aerial landscape. An every day walk on the beach in Cozumel, Mexico becomes Greek Beach when Dolenz stumbles upon this architecture left on the sand. Quiet Café, taken in Puerto Rico, is a small spot the artist stopped at for a rest on her travels but turns into a photo that looks like stopped in time. Dolenz’s work is straight photography with minimal computer assistance. Contrast or saturation might be adjusted but for the most part they are what you see. And what you see is beautiful.

Artist Lisa Ryan at Tryst

Green Grown the Rushes

DUE TO AN ARTIST SCHEDULING CONFLICT THE ARTIST RECEPTION HAS BEEN POSTPONED. LISA RYAN WILL HOST A RECEPTION ON SEPTEMBER 22, 7-9PM AT TRYST. MEMBERS OF BEESWAX WILL BE AT TRYST ON THE ORIGINAL DATE, SEPTEMBER 8, 7-9PM FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT ATTEND THE LATER DATE. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED.

Washington, D.C. (August 22, 2011) – Lisa Ryan: In Bloom is the first D.C. exhibition for the Irish-born artist, Lisa Ryan. This show, organized by Beeswax, will be on display at Tryst Coffeehouse from September 7 through October 4, 2011. The opening reception, with artist in attendance, will be held on September 8, 2011, from 7 until 9 p.m. In Bloom features paintings from the artist’s abstract oil on canvas series.

Lisa Ryan, an Irish-born artist, trained as a sculptor in Ireland at the National College of Art and Design, graduating in 1998. Upon completion of her studies, Ryan moved to the U.S. settling in New York City where she began her career as a painter. Working on mostly a private commission basis, she completed works for restaurants and private collectors. She has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and in New York City. This is her first exhibition since arriving in Washington, D.C.

The exhibition, Lisa Ryan: In Bloom, as explained by the artist, “is about rebirth, regeneration and growth. The installation embodies the concept of the unyielding spread of life, within us and without us, in our world and across the ‘universe’. The individual works touch upon the concept of approaching change, and the hope and fear that accompany our responses to it.”

The estimated 12, oil on canvas, paintings on display are all 36” x 48” and come with ominous titles such as Frozen Lake, One Great Leap and Feeling Gravity’s Pull. They are abstract works looking like what one might expect to see when looking through a telescope at the surface of the moon. Many could also be paintings resembling time-lapse photography of a solar eclipse. Then, there are the Norman Lewis-esque Green Grow the Rushes and Velocity pieces with their color fields and small detailed sculpted abstract patterns. One can definitely see a sculptural influence in all of Lisa Ryan’s work.

NYC artist Carla E. Reyes shows at Tryst in Washington, DC

NYC artist Carla E. Reyes shows at Tryst in Washington, DC

Texture Garden: Flora Series is a group of textural, mixed-media, floral paintings by Carla E. Reyes, exploring the cycles of nature and the human desire to capture and possess it. All of the paintings are inspired by actual images of man-made objects that were created from a variety of materials (clay, metal, stone, etc.) depicting a floral motif, set in a natural environment and undergoing the natural and chemical processes of aging and weathering. Carla’s artwork explores the color, texture, and character of natural and man-made surfaces, particularly in a state of change or interaction; which she finds both profound and beautiful. Flowers in particular, are cherished objects of nature that humans seek to preserve, but their seasonal appearance in nature, and short life span in unnatural environments, remind us of the fleeting and precious nature of existence. These works are meant to bring attention to the cycles of life, nature, and change, and the beauty of the processes that take place at any given moment.

Showing her work for the first time in Washington, DC, the Tryst exhibition will feature works from the Texture Garden: Flora Series, as well as other textural collage paintings from previous bodies of work that explore a natural motif or theme. Organized by Beeswax Arts, the exhibition will be on view from August 3 – September 6, 2011. There will be an public reception with the artist on Thursday, August 4th from 7-9pm.

DC Artist Networking Happy Hour

DC Artist Networking Happy Hour

DC is full of bars with happy hours and networking events. Being able to network and meet other people in the same profession is just as important for an artist as it is for any other professional. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of trying to network at crowded art openings. Plus, how rude is that to take away from the exhibiting artists day in the spotlight?

Join Beeswax as it hosts the first of what will become a monthly event, DC Artist Networking Happy Hour. A night of music, a great food menu, drink specials at the bar AND mingling and networking with local artists, art patrons, and art lovers.

Held at Science Club (home of the former Art-o-matic happy hours) on Tuesday, April 5th, 6-8pm. This first Happy Hour is free but the future events will be held for a $5 cover (proceeds to benefit Beeswax as it finalizes its non-profit status.)

Bring your business cards and be ready for a great time!

Step right up, and enjoy the show.

Step right up, and enjoy the show.

Join us for the opening reception of paintings by Todd Gardner at Tryst (2459 18th Street NW, Washington D.C., DC 20009).

Todd Gardner is a painter living in Alexandria. He’s been involved in the DC arts community for 10 years, and is currently a member of DCAC’s Sparkplug Arts Collective.  He has an MFA in painting from the University of South Carolina.

About the ALIVE series:

Ladies, and Gentlemen…

The sideshow is where one finds oddities, and delves into the dark and far more interesting side of the circus. The “ALIVE” series represents the latest in my investigations into circus and sideshow imagery, and how the performers and acts remain vital and enduring metaphors for the human condition. With that in mind, I am exploring the darker side using sideshow banners as a vehicle.

Pieces like “Trapped”, and “Freak Show” illustrate a sense of disconnect and isolation. In contrast, pieces like “How Does He Do It” and “One Man Band” serve to portray taking a more active role in the world in order to address and improve one’s place in it.

The sideshow banner has always been used to draw people in, and the “ALIVE” tag was used to show that there was in fact a living, breathing thing in the tents.  Metaphorically, they are used the same way in this exhibition.

So step right up, and enjoy the show.
